about

CUTOUT (6x6)
Poems, letters, sound recordings: at once historical artifacts and personal perspectives. Streetside vantage points of London struggles in Christabel Pankhurst’s documentary audio (‘Drives’) and LKJ’s epistle (‘Junctions’). A Brooklyn world vanished, though not without a trace, in Steve Dalachinsky’s autobiographical poem (‘Avenues’). A letter with news of social uprising in Visconti’s Il Gattopardo (‘Roads’). Buried layers of cities' past, “Beneath the cobblestones, the beach!” Permuted concrete, traversed by Brion Gysin (‘Paths’); memory, speech, sound – inscribed, manipulated. Inscribed, manipulated – scratches re-animating friction. It takes more to hold it down than to buy it up (‘Carts’). –AL
